After a gestation period extending three weeks past her due date, the exceptional mare Winx has successfully delivered her third foal at Coolmore Stud, with the birth proceeding without any complications.
Debbie Kepitis, a part-owner of Winx, informed Racing And Sports that the wait had been patient, with the mare finally foaling around 10pm last evening.
“Winx has been overdue with her foals before but we just let nature takes its course,” Mrs Kepitis said. “But both Winx and her foal are doing really well, it’s very exciting.”
Peter and Peter Tighe, also joint owners of Winx, had been on-site at Coolmore Stud for five days in hopes of witnessing the mare foal. They had, however, departed for their home yesterday afternoon, missing the actual birth.
“We got home after 8pm and Winx gave birth an hour or two later,” Peter Tighe told Racing And Sports. “But all that matters is that Winx and her foal are healthy and well, so it’s great news. We are already planning to go back to the stud later this week to see Winx but all the reports we are getting from Coolmore is that she has produced a beautiful filly, probably her best foal yet.”
Tom Magnier, the prominent figure at Coolmore Stud, reported a significant level of excitement among the farm’s staff following the arrival of Winx’s latest offspring.
“It’s been a long wait for Winx to have her foal but everything went smoothly last night,” Magnier said. “Winx is a wonderful ‘Mum’ and she has produced a very good foal so we are delighted. Winx was born and raised at Coolmore and it is an honour to have her back at the farm as a broodmare.”
This is Winx’s third foal. Her previous offspring include a Pierro filly, purchased by Mrs Kepitis for a world-record $10 million at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sales two years ago, and a Snitzel colt, who is now two years old and as yet unnamed.
The Pierro filly, named Quincineara, was retired without ever racing and was recently served by Super Seth. Winx’s Snitzel colt, withdrawn from the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale earlier this year, has completed his rehabilitation and is currently undertaking exercise on a water walker.
Mr Tighe indicated that Winx’s ownership group will convene soon to discuss the possibility of the mare being served again this spring. Nevertheless, it is likely that she will be given some time off before returning to the breeding barn next year.
Widely acknowledged as one of the greatest racehorses of all time, Winx recorded 37 wins from her 43 starts, including an incredible run of 33 consecutive victories and a world record 25 Group 1 wins. Chris Waller’s training prowess saw Winx claim four Cox Plates, four George Ryder Stakes, three Queen Elizabeth Stakes, three George Main Stakes, a Doncaster Mile, and an Epsom Handicap, earning her Legend status and induction into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.
