Yowie impresses with debut Sandown win

Trainer John Sadler made the right call in electing to keep first starter at home for two-year-old race at Sandown with Yowie registering an impressive win.

Yowie was also an acceptor in the Listed Cinderella Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville on Monday, but Sadler elected to scratch the filly from the race won by Bistro.

Instead, Sadler saddled up the daughter of Vancouver in the Ladbroke It! Handicap (1000m) at Sandown on Wednesday.

Well supported to run the $4.20 second favourite under Damian Lane, Yowie raced to a 1-½ length win from Star Magic ($4.40) with Over Shady ($5) a further 1-¾ lengths away third.

Sadler said Yowie had showed ability from the outset and was almost bombproof.

“We were going to go to Adelaide on Monday but watching the race I’m glad we didn’t and instead we came here,” Sadler said.

“She had shown us ability, but you can never know for sure come race day, but I’m thrilled with her, and I’m thrilled with the manner in which she did it.

“She’s a simple straight forward filly, very easy to train and I didn’t have to lift her into the race at all.

“She’s presented here at the races very well and I’m very pleased for the owner David Digney who is an enormous supporter of our stable.

“He’s in Adelaide today and he’ll be very happy with that.”

While Yowie may have missed out on a start in a stakes race on debut, Sadler is planning on sending two-year-old to the Listed Redoute’s Choice (1100m) at Caulfield on April 9.

“It’s a nice progression to the 1100 metres as long as she pulls up well and I don’t see why she won’t,” Sadler said.

Even though Yowie is eligible for all the VOBIS bonus, she is unfortunately ineligible for the $1 million VOBIS Showdown (1200m) at Caulfield on April 23 as the filly’s sire Vancouver did not stand in Victoria when she was conceived.
