Tancred Stakes Tips, Bets and Race Preview – 2022

The Tancred Stakes is one of the highlights of the Sydney Autumn Carnival, and a talented field of stayers will assemble at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday afternoon.

Talented mare Duais beat home many of these rivals in the Australian Cup a fortnight ago, but she’ll need to be at her best to claim a third career Group 1 victory in the Tancred Stakes.

Have I put her on top? Check out my 2022 Tancred Stakes Tips below to find out.

Tancred Stakes – Winner – No. 3 The Chosen One

The Chosen One has been a great horse for the Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman yard throughout his career, and he can cement his legacy and extremely strong stud credentials by winning the Tancred Stakes.

The Chosen One knocked on the door of Group 1 success for many, many seasons, returning big performances in Australasia’s best races, including the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup.

With that elusive Group 1 appearing to get further away, however, the Savabeel entire returned an incredible first-up performance this year to win the Thorndon Mile in New Zealand.

He has since filled the minors in both the Herbie Dyke Stakes and the Bonecrusher Stakes, and he stakes his place in this contest at peak fitness.

Tancred Stakes – 2nd – No. 2 Spanish Mission

Melbourne Cup placegetter Spanish Mission is ready to peak third-up in the Tancred Stakes.

The former European was a great stayer under the care of Andrew Balding earlier in his career, winning some nice races and finding form around some of the world’s best.

I though that there was a lot to like about his first-up effort for third, beaten a head in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup in February, and he takes his place in the Tancred Stakes field following another third placing in the Australian Cup.

A mile and a half is ideal, as is the booking of James McDonald.

Tancred Stakes – 3rd – No. 11 Duais

She’s a very, very good horse, and Duais wouldn’t look out of place in the Tancred Stakes winner’s stall.

The Shamus Award mare ended her three-year-old season an impressive winner of the Queensland Oaks, and while she didn’t hit those peaks in spring, she continued to race well in strong company.

She has improved with each of her three starts back this time, and she couldn’t have been more impressive in the Australian Cup last time out.

She’s at peak fitness for this contest, I just wonder if 2000m might be her best trip.

Tancred Stakes – 4th – No. 5 Great House

Great House has improved for two starts back from a spell, and I think that he can run a nice race in the Tancred Stakes.

The Galileo gelding has been a good horse for the Waller stable since arriving in Australia, but he really started to realise his potential in the spring, winning the Newcastle Cup and the Hotham, and running fifth in the Caulfield Cup most notably.

I thought his second-up run this time for third in the Sky High Stakes was full of merit, and he is ready to do something on Saturday.
