The Metropolitan Handicap Tips, Bets and Race Preview – 2021

The Metropolitan is the major staying feature of the Sydney Spring Carnival, and a capacity field will chase a position on the illustrious winner’s list at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Two-time Group 1 winner Montefilia has been set for the race and has opened our warm favourite in The Metropolitan betting, but she’ll need to be at her very best to beat home the likes of She’s Ideel, Entente and Shared Ambition.

Have I put her on top? Check out The Metropolitan Tips below to find out.

Suggested Bets

The Metropolitan – Winner – No. 8 Montefilia

I thought that she would win the Kingston Town Stakes a fortnight ago, and while she was denied by She’s Ideel, I’m confident that Montefilia will turn the tables in The Metropolitan.

She was a star of the 2020 Spring Carnival, and recorded consecutive wins in the Group 1 Flight Stakes and the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes before ending her prep third in the Oaks.

Montefilia was unable to build on her CV during this year’s Autumn Carnival, but her two runs back this time suggested that she is on the verge of another special performance.

The Metropolitan – 2nd – No. 18 Charms Star

This is something of a speculative throw at the stumps, but there is no doubt the Charms Star will find her pet conditions third-up in The Metropolitan, and she could prove big overs at odds of $34 (at publish).

The Per Incanto mare finished a close second in the New Zealand Oaks in March, and she arrived in Australia for consecutive placings in The Roses and the Queensland Oaks in winter.

She finished down the order over 1500m at Randwick when resuming this time, but ran home well to finish fifth in a mile race last time, and she gets into this contest extremely well under the conditions.

The Metropolitan – 3rd – No. 12 She’s Ideel

She’s Ideel looks to have returned to the races in career-best form this time, and she too looks ideally suited to The Metropolitan.

The Dundeel mare was a consistent performer during the Autumn Carnival this year, and finished second behind Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet in the Tancred Stakes most notably, before ending her season fourth in the Sydney Cup.

She was friendless in Winx Stakes betting when resuming this time, but mustered an electric turn of foot to fill the minors, finishing just over a head behind Mo’unga and Verry Elleegant.

While she failed to fire in the Chelmsford Stakes, she responded with an impressive win in the Kingston Town, and getting out to a mile and a half looks perfect at this point of her prep.

The Metropolitan – 4th – No. 9 Attorney

The consistent Attorney looks well placed to return another competitive effort in The Metropolitan.

Attorney has recorded five wins and two second placings from his eighteen career starts so far, and he has found some around plenty of above-average stayers throughout his career.

The Pakenham Cup winner has improved for two starts back this time and takes his place in The Metropolitan field off the back of a credible run for sixth in the Kingston Town Stakes.

He too will improve third-up and getting further out in trip.
