Fiore a West Star in the Northam Stakes

West Star underlined his rising talent with a commanding win in the Group 3 Northam Stakes (1300m) on Sunday, confirming he’s a three-year-old going places fast.

Despite enduring a wide run without cover, the Simon Miller-trained gelding showed his class late, storming home under jockey Lucy Fiore to defeat Magnificent Andy by 1¾ lengths. Comfort Me finished third in what proved to be a tightly contested finish behind the winner.

It marked a sharp rebound from his effort in the Quokka (1200m), where he ran seventh against elite older sprinters in the $5 million slot race.

Fiore, riding West Star for the first time after the likes of Tim Clark, William Pike, and Chris Parnham had previously partnered the gelding, was full of praise for her mount’s professionalism and acceleration.

“He is lovely, and we definitely won that one on class alone,” she said. “I tried to stay as still as I could for as long as possible, but when I said go at the 250m, he put them away.”

West Star has now won five of his eight starts and placed in two others. He previously won the Listed Belgravia Stakes (1200m) last spring and continues to build an impressive resume.

Purchased for $175,000 from the Perth Magic Millions, he’s now earned over $700,000 in prize money and bonuses. Trainer Simon Miller indicated a Melbourne spring campaign could be on the agenda for West Star and stablemate Generosity.
