Rain won’t dampen Peter Snowden’s confidence in Beadman ahead of the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day.
The three-year-old son of Snitzel impressed his trainer in a jump-out down the straight last Friday, finishing second behind Balastier but more importantly showing focus and professionalism ahead of his first start at headquarters.
“He seemed focused and jumped out nicely,” Snowden said. “We weren’t worried about anything else, just trialling the horse. We held him up early, let him go in the last 300 metres and he worked to the line beautifully.”
Beadman has won two of his five starts, highlighted by a stunning 8¼-length romp in the Group 3 Ken Russell Stakes (1200m) on heavy going at the Gold Coast. After that, he was spelled and set for the Coolmore campaign.
Since resuming, the colt has placed in both Sydney starts — third behind Mahroona at Rosehill before running second to Hidden Motive in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes.
“He’s a very smart horse,” Snowden said. “He’s still raw, still learning, but he’s handled everything we’ve thrown at him. The straight didn’t worry him at all, and it’s good for him to have had that look before race day.”
Snowden confirmed the colt has settled in well at his temporary Flemington base, with Blake Shinn to take the reins again. “He’s thriving down here and he looks terrific,” Snowden added.
Beadman is one of 15 nominees for the Coolmore, which also includes Golden Rose winner Beiwacht, Blue Diamond Stakes winner Devil Night, Hidden Motive, Tentyris, and classy filly My Gladiola.
