Following a thrilling win in The Invitation with his classy mare Stefi Magnetica, Warwick Farm trainer Bjorn Baker is chasing further feature race success when he saddles up Mayfair — and possibly Perfumist — in next weekend’s $10 million Golden Eagle at Royal Randwick.
It had been a testing spring for Baker, whose team had gone close several times without breaking through. Overpass produced a brave fourth in The Everest, Pericles finished just outside the placings in the King Charles III Stakes, and Iowna Merc found one better in the Sydney Stakes. Meanwhile, Mayfair ran an eye-catching third in the Silver Eagle and Perfumist continued her consistent form with another solid effort in the Angst Stakes.
Those near misses were forgotten when Stefi Magnetica stormed home to win The Invitation, delivering Baker a much-deserved carnival highlight. Now, the trainer hopes that success will be a springboard into another big payday at Randwick next Saturday.
Mayfair, who joined Baker’s stable from the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott yard, made a strong debut for his new connections with that Silver Eagle placing. “He was a very astute online purchase by Darby Racing, I think around the $200,000 mark,” Baker said. “He’s already guaranteed a spot in the field and Dylan Gibbons will ride.”
While Mayfair is safely in the field, Perfumist is on the fringe, sitting equal 41st in the ballot. “She’s ready to go and hopefully a few above us on the order drop out of the running,” Baker said. “There are a few others ahead of us that ran yesterday and maybe they won’t back up. Rachel King will ride if she gets a run.”
Both runners are rated $26 in early markets for the 1500-metre Golden Eagle.
