Weather will be the deciding factor in whether Tentyris backs up in a second Group 1 this week, with the exciting colt nominated for Saturday’s VRC Champions Sprint (1200m) at Flemington.
Last weekend’s dominant Coolmore Stud Stakes winner has come through the run in excellent order, but the Anthony and Sam Freedman stable will not risk him on a heavy track.
Flemington is expected to receive between 10 and 30mm of rain on Saturday, on top of some falls forecast for Friday evening, leaving conditions uncertain until raceday.
“He’s had a faultless week,” Sam Freedman said.
“He’s tough and at the top of his game, but we’re very wary of the rain. If it got into the heavy range, we’d have to think carefully about running.”
The stable has deliberately kept Tentyris to easy work this week, focusing on freshness rather than fitness heading into the test against seasoned sprinters.
“He doesn’t need to do any more. He’s rock-hard fit,” Freedman said.
“He’s just been trotting, cantering and ticking over. If everything is right with the track, he’ll present in great order.”
The Champions Sprint could become a tactical affair, with stablemate Tropicus shaping as the likely leader.
“He’ll have something to chase, which is what he likes,” Freedman said.
Craig Williams takes the ride at 53.5kg, with Mark Zahra aboard Giga Kick.
Freedman added that the predicted rain would not disadvantage Tropicus.
“He’ll enjoy it if it comes. He’ll roll forward and give them something to look at.”
