Ethan Brown has enjoyed a lucrative Spring Carnival, but one key accomplishment still eludes him — a Group 1 victory — and he plans to change that at Caulfield this weekend.
The accomplished jockey will again be aboard Jimmysstar in the $1 million CF Orr Stakes, the same horse who has been at the centre of Brown’s major opportunities this season.
The Everest placegetter and winner of the $3 million Russell Balding Stakes returns to Victorian racing for the first time this campaign after spearheading Brown’s notable Sydney commitments through spring.
Only three Victorian Saturday meetings — Champions Day, Cox Plate Day and Caulfield Guineas Day — have featured Brown since September as he followed Jimmysstar’s preparation under Ciaron Maher and prominent owners Ozzie Kheir and John O’Neill.
“It’s been a good spring, the bigger wins were definitely in Sydney but you just go where the good horses are and the opportunity is,” Brown said.
“I’ve had a lot of good backing this spring through Ciaron Maher and Ozzie and Johnny and plenty of other owners and I’ve made the most of that.”
Jimmysstar’s recent million-dollar Stakes win is Brown’s highlight of 2025, supplementing his earlier Group 2 triumph aboard Tempted and a runner-up finish on the same horse in the Golden Rose.
Brown has been bridesmaid in several majors, becoming the only jockey to place in the three richest races in Australia this year.
He finished third on Jimmysstar in the $20m The Everest, third on Middle Earth in the $10m Melbourne Cup, and second on Sepals in the $10m Golden Eagle.
His season earnings sit at $10,345,510, putting him only behind James McDonald and Mark Zahra among Australia’s top-earning riders.
Brown also hit the lead in the Victorian Jockeys’ Premiership after a four-win haul at Seymour on Thursday.
Jimmysstar has delivered nearly $4m of Brown’s tally, and the star sprinter’s consistency has elevated him into elite weight-for-age company.
Following a Group 1 double in the Oakleigh Plate and All Aged Stakes in autumn, Brown believes he has reached a new level.
“He’s cemented himself as a proper weight-for-age horse I think and that’s been evident in his form,” Brown said.
“He had to take that step, but he’s certainly done that.”
After a sharp hit-out earlier in the week, Brown reported Jimmysstar is primed and ready.
“I jumped on him Monday, he worked really well, he’s drawn a nice gate (three) and there’s no reason why he’s not going to show up again,” he said.
“He’s had a big prep but there’s still a horse there and still the best of him I believe. He’s flying.”
Brown also rides Kaleo in the Sandown Guineas and Rohesia in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes on a bumper card.
