Docklands hasn’t returned to the winners’ stall since Royal Ascot in June, but few horses have faced the calibre of opposition he has met across the UK, France, Japan and now Hong Kong.

On Sunday, the globetrotting entire lines up in the Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin, giving trainer Harry Eustace and jockey Tom Marquand another chance at a major international triumph.

Docklands reached a career peak when capturing the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes (1609m) at Royal Ascot, earning a Racing and Sports rating of 122.

He has not been disgraced in strong form lines since, producing an eye-catching fifth in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes (1609m), before competitive runs in elite company at Deauville and Ascot. His most recent start saw him finish fifth in Japan’s Mile Championship (1600m), unable to strike from too far back.

With Sha Tin’s mile potentially a more favourable scenario, the challenge remains significant against the likes of Voyage Bubble and My Wish. Eustace, however, is buoyed by what he has seen.

“The Japanese experience was fantastic but hard,” Eustace said.

“The travelling was hard for him and drawing 16 of 18 didn’t help. But he bounced out of the run well and looked great this morning. I think we’ll run a solid race.”

Eustace added that Docklands’ mental strength has been key during his overseas campaign.

“The first time you travel horses you don’t know how they’ll cope, but he handled it. And this year he has taken the travelling even better.”

With the entire looking to better last year’s fifth in the Hong Kong Mile, Marquand will also look to improve his own local record at Sha Tin, having logged just one win from 35 rides.
