The Mark Walker team at Cranbourne has fallen deeper in love with Geegees Mistruth as her tenure with them lengthens.
Previously under Stuart Gandy, the four-year-old Tasmanian product entered the Walker fold last spring.
She has won six of her 15 races but lacks a mainland success; the stable eyes the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday as the chance to change that.
Ben Gleeson, assistant trainer, shared that they planned to have the mare primed and fresh for the race.
The field not at full strength is another plus for Geegees Mistruth, per Gleeson.
Three runs into her Walker association, and the mare has placed every time.
Her fresh campaign saw a third over 1000m at Caulfield January 24, then a strong trial win February 9.
“She trialled up impressively and we’ve intentionally gone a month between runs, second-up, which her record is two wins, two seconds,” Gleeson said.
“She flies with that little bit of freshness in her.
“She couldn’t have trialled any better and her gallop on Tuesday was excellent.
“The less than capacity field suits as she can find trouble in the run, but the extra 100 metres is good and hopefully those gaps come easier for her.”
The trainer admitted Geegees Mistruth is tough to handle in prep, but their methods are yielding results with more time.
“We’ve tried a few different things with her training, and we think that it’s working,” Gleeson said.
“She’s a trick to train, but we love her, and we think we’ve got the best of her now and hopefully on Saturday she shows it.”
