Trainer Waller stays calm on weather ahead of Verry Elleegant Stakes

Soft ground from rain could alter dynamics for the Verry Elleegant Stakes, but Chris Waller as trainer won’t dwell on conditions before Saturday.

A Bureau of Meteorology outlook suggests between 4mm and about 60mm of showers through the week.

Elite mare Autumn Glow, the short-priced elect, has victories on all footing, like heavy 10 in the Toy Show Quality (1100m) in August, yet Group 1 performance on it is unknown.

Track work isn’t fazing Waller right now.

“I’ll worry about it Saturday morning,” Waller said.

“If you worry about it before then, you start bringing things in that you have no control over and you can lose sight of other things. Yes, it’s a factor. But as long as it’s safe, she will be running.

“They’ve got the tracks in Sydney pretty good at the moment . . . There will be room for a bit of rain.”

In nine flawless starts, Autumn Glow has risen to prominence, easily accounting for barnmates Aeliana and Lindermann when stepping up to weight-for-age in the Apollo Stakes (1400m) last time.

They rejoin the fray for the Group 1 Verry Elleegant Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on the weekend, with the added furlong likely to help their cause.

“They’re a bit more comfortable at the distance,” Waller said.

“But it’s hard to quantify, Autumn Glow might be better too.”

Dominating the event lately with seven triumphs in 10 years – four via Winx 2016-2019 – Waller eyes another success through Autumn Glow, installed at $1.30 early.
