A quarter plus of the Sydney Cup runners hail from Chris Waller’s yard, as assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth reveals their collective asset.
“With all of our runners in this, there isn’t much of a query over the distance,” Duckworth said.
Seven Sydney Cup aspirants among 15 await their 3200m baptism, but Waller’s charges all carry proven stamina at staying distances.
In last year’s Melbourne Cup (3200m), River Of Stars took fourth; Valiant King has lined up twice in the famed race, Soul Of Spain prevailed at 3319m Irish, Hutchence at his sole overseas two miles.
Stable flagship River Of Stars ($7.50) bears 56.5kg in what shapes as their strongest play.
Post-1989, mares count five winners, Makybe Diva included at 55.5kg in 2004 amid her Melbourne Cup hat-trick.
River Of Stars confronts demands, but Duckworth backs her superiority and endurance.
“She’s the class horse in the race, which is why she’s got top weight,” he said.
“She’s got a lovely draw (barrier six) to try to offset that weight, and two miles isn’t an issue with her, she is a proper staying mare.”
Caulfield Cup third-placer Valiant King lacks a placing in three this term, yet excitement builds for his Saturday tilt post last year’s scratch.
“He was awesome in the spring,” Duckworth said.
“He’s yet to hit that height this prep, but we’re hoping Saturday will be when he does.
“He was scratched from the race last year, so we’ve got some unfinished business with him.”
Waller’s Day two Championships assault features 14 in four Group 1s, starring mares Autumn Glow and Aeliana for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).
Duckworth lauds Aeliana’s Ranvet Stakes and Tancred Stakes conquests, even as Autumn Glow seeks 12th win amid buzz.
“She has been faultless,” he said.
“She’s such a terrific horse, and she stays very well.”
Aeliana’s 2400m form contrasts Autumn Glow’s new middle test at Randwick.
Waller, McDonald affirm her trip fitness, expecting foes to test via early speed.
“The query is how quick they do end up going in this 2000 metre race,” Duckworth said.
“Everyone in the race will, I imagine, want to make it a stamina test as that’s likely to be the only chink in the favourite’s armour.”
Waller’s Lindermann eyes lead, with Haggas duo Dubai Honour, Caviar Heights and Sir Delius versatile up front.
