Antino, the star from Queensland, has been put out to pasture after a setback noticed when he came back from his latest race in the state last Saturday.
Breaking his home-state absence since last year’s four-length track-record clinic in the Group 1 Doomben Cup, the seven-year-old gelding fought on for fourth – 2-1/2 lengths behind $91 roughie Kronenbourg – during the Listed 1600m Brisbane Handicap.
Sunday’s inspection of the Tony Gollan runner uncovered heat and swelling around his right fore tendon, confirmed as a deeper concern.
“Further veterinary examinations this morning confirmed sustained that injury during the race,” Gollan said in a statement on social media late on Monday afternoon.
“After consultation with the ownership group, the decision was made to retire Antino from racing.
“It is with tremendous sadness we have had to make this decision, given the thrills and excitement he has provided the racing industry, from fans to our staff and owners.
“Antino will enjoy a well-earned retirement after his rehabilitation from injury.”
The Redwood-sired gelding signs off with 13 successes from 33 efforts, seven more podium finishes, and stakes of $3,465,065.
Highlighting his career was the four-length Doomben Cup win last year at 2:00.88, his second top-grade triumph for the initial NZ$27,000 outlay, alongside the 2024 Toorak Handicap (1600m) by 6-1/2 lengths.
