$5.6m hammer price for Chayan tops Inglis Chairman’s Sale

Coming as the ultimate lot in the choice offerings, Chayan rewarded those who waited by establishing fresh records at Inglis Chairman’s Sale in Sydney Thursday evening.

The I Am Invincible two-year-old filly, this year’s Group 2 Reisling Stakes winner and Golden Slipper favourite, achieved $5.6 million paid by Coolmore’s Tom Magnier.

It became Australia’s public auction record for a two-year-old filly, demolishing the $4.2m Chairman’s Sale best from last year’s The Everest winner Bella Nipotina.

Chayan is now second on the Southern Hemisphere public sale list for fillies or mares, behind Imperatriz who fetched $6.6m at 2024 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

Purchased initially for $250,000 at Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, she was consigned by Eric Koh, whose owner sentiments were mixed after the blockbuster result.

“Unbelievable, I came here thinking maybe $3.6 million would be tops, at best, but to go beyond four (million), beyond 5 (to) 5.6 is unbelievable,” Koh said.

“This is obviously the biggest result and achievement for myself, so I’m very happy, very satisfied but heavy-hearted to lose her.

“I’m happy for Coolmore, for Tom (Magnier) and I think she’s got huge potential ahead.”

Key to her appeal was Chayan’s racing trajectory, supervised by Annabel and Rob Archibald throughout her career.

She was second to Streisand at debut in Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m), then unplaced in Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m), rebounding with a stellar Reisling Stakes success in Sydney.

That performance yielded a Timeform 111 rating, the season’s peak for Australian two-year-old fillies.

Starting $5.50 favourite, Chayan placed fifth in the Golden Slipper, roughly four lengths shy of Guest House.

Magnier stated the Archibald duo would keep training Chayan, despite expected competition for her services.

“When you have a filly as highly-rated and thought of as she is you expect to have all the top people on her,” he said.

“We’re delighted to get her, we’ll need a bit of luck but it’s over to Rob and Annabel now.”

Nine offerings cleared $1m, including top mare Benedetta, Hellbent’s Group 1 winner, sold for $1.9m.

Yulong took her, plus $1.8m for three-time Kiwi Group 1 horse Provence, $1,050,000 for Snow In May and Hazlebrook, $1m Moldova.

Katsumi Yoshida (Japan) $1.4m Philia, Stefan Pardi $1.2m Kiki Express, Arrowfield Stud/Hermitage $1m Arabian Summer.

The sale amassed over $39m across 115 lots, mares at $494,747 average, $300,000 median.
