Tim Clark celebrated his birthday with a successful riding treble at Rosehill, taking an early lead in the Sydney jockeys’ premiership.

After earlier victories with Funshow and Steel Strike, Clark delivered a masterful ride aboard Carbonados to win the NSW Jockeys Association Handicap (1300m).

The jockey had to patiently navigate traffic, finding himself pocketed behind the leaders before identifying a clear passage in the straight.

“Carbonados travelled up well,” Clark said. “But then coming into the straight I had to figure out how well the horse (Gatsby’s) was going outside the leader. It looked like the leader was going better so I was happy to stay where I was. I had the horse to make a run when the slightest of gaps appeared and he was able to push his way through and won well.”

Once clear, the $15 chance surged through to win by 1¼ lengths from Althoff ($9.50), who finished strongly, with the favourite Fire Star ($4.60) a close third.

This victory signified a remarkable turnaround for Carbonados, who had only one horse behind him in his previous three starts.

“Carbonados has been a little hit and miss and hard to catch but the switching of states, changing things up for him worked well,” Clark added.

Trained at Flemington by the Hayes brothers (Ben, Will, and JD), Carbonados now has seven wins from 22 starts and has amassed almost $400,000 in career earnings.

The Lindsay Park stable also had a successful day at Rosehill, with Run Harry Run contributing to their stable’s double.

These results leave Team Hayes sharing the lead in the early Sydney trainers’ premiership with Richard and Will Freedman, who also had winners with Attractiveness and Horizons on the season’s opening day.

Meanwhile, Chris Waller, the defending champion trainer, experienced a rare winless Saturday at his home track as he begins his pursuit of a 17th consecutive Sydney trainers’ premiership.
