Jockey Harry Coffey has been deemed fit to ride Shockletz in the upcoming Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington.
Concerns over a collarbone injury, sustained when Pondalowie had a fall in the Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday, had put Coffey’s participation in doubt.
Following the incident, the jockey was taken to hospital for imaging and evaluation of a suspected collarbone fracture, subsequently undergoing a surgical intervention on Sunday.
He has now received clearance from his surgeon and Racing Victoria’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ben Barresi, enabling him to fulfill his riding commitments on Tuesday.
In addition to Shockletz in the Melbourne Cup, Coffey is scheduled to ride in three other races on Melbourne Cup Day and has three rides booked for the VRC Oaks Day program at Flemington on Thursday.
Earlier in the week, Racing Victoria confirmed that all 24 horses accepted for the Melbourne Cup had successfully passed their final veterinary checks on Monday and were therefore cleared to compete.
