Contrary to the usual outcome for trial stars, Jack Bruce found himself pleasantly surprised when Canadian Fling delivered a winning performance at Gold Coast three weeks ago.
Canadian Fling is poised to be a popular choice among punters at Ipswich on Thursday as she contests the Gibson Architects Benchmark 58 Handicap over 1700 metres, on a day where the entire circuit will feature the rail out nine metres.
“She’s done a good job,” stated Bruce.
“I thought her first trial for me was a little disappointing but as she has done more work she has steadily kept improving. I gave her three trials before going to Gold Coast and I probably thought she needed a run on that occasion, but she was too good (over 1400m). On the back of that I thought the rise in distance would suit so hence we are going to 1700.”
The six-year-old mare was transferred to Bruce’s stable a few months back from the renowned Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott operation. In a departure from the typical front-running style often seen from their trainees, Canadian Fling adopted a position towards the rear.
However, this racing style was not a predetermined strategy.
“I am happy to let horses find their feet and if she skipped out of the gates then fine, but she settled back and come home well so I was happy with that. I showed she had another string to her bow.”
Canadian Fling is currently listed as the $2.50 favourite in markets available on Wednesday.
