Adelaide stakes call for Ciaron Maher’s promising filly Exit

Black-type results significantly boost a filly’s appeal for broodmare duties later.

Exit, victorious at Flemington in her latest, travels to Adelaide for a shot at stakes level in the Listed H C Nitschke Stakes (1400m) on Morphettville Parks this Saturday.

The filly under Ciaron Maher’s guidance is also entered in Randwick’s Group 3 James H B Carr Stakes (1400m) Saturday, sans jockey booking, but Rochelle Milnes, a key South Australian rider, is set for Adelaide.

Jack Turnbull from the Ciaron Maher stable’s national assistant team viewed Adelaide as the preferable, softer race.

“Hopefully we can get a Black Type victory and that’s why we’re going,” Turnbull said.

“There was a horse in Sydney that was undefeated and obviously the one to beat, and it was drawn outside us, but we’ve decided on Adelaide given it’s a more realistic chance in terms of winning.

“She was an expensive yearling and if we can get Black Type on her page with victory as a three-year-old, it would be huge for her.”

With two wins from eight starts, Exit is expected by Turnbull to progress further.

Her recent 1400m Flemington effort produced a strong win on heavy track with Jamie Melham steering.

Exit broke maiden status at Sandown last July amid soft conditions.

“She will continue to get better, and she’s really come on with the blinkers,” Turnbull said.

1400 metres matches her well.

She can be ridden tactically here; barrier six positions her nicely for a spot in the top five early.

Preferring give in the ground, rain would aid her cause.
