Angel to Capitalise on handicap chance in Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

Chris Waller has confirmed Angel Capital is more likely to line up in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield this Saturday rather than wait for the $2 million Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley six days later.

Both races represent lucrative spring options, but Waller believes the Caulfield feature is the right fit. “We’d love to go the Manikato, but he’ll get in well at the weights in the Sir Rupert Clarke and 1400 will be no problem,” he said. “I’d hate to miss the Sir Rupert Clarke and then draw the outside in the Manikato. If we’re good enough to win a Manikato, he’ll win multiple Group 1s, so we’ll just try the Sir Rupert Clarke.”

Angel Capital, purchased by Yulong earlier this year and transferred to Waller’s care from Clinton McDonald, announced himself with a brilliant first-up victory in the Listed Chautauqua Stakes at Moonee Valley. The four-year-old has now registered five wins from just eight starts and continues to excite his new trainer. “We’ve had to be patient with him, especially with the wet tracks earlier this year, but he’s a really nice horse,” Waller said.

Saturday’s Sir Rupert Clarke has attracted 22 entries including Another Wil and promising galloper Sepals, while the Underwood Stakes on the same card has drawn a strong 26-horse list with Buckaroo, Melbourne Cup hope Sir Delius and last year’s Cup hero Knight’s Choice among them.
