Antino ready for G2 Hollindale Stakes test

Trainer Tony Gollan isn’t anticipating a repeat of Antino’s Toorak Handicap heroics this weekend, but he’s hopeful of something similar in a few weeks’ time.

The son of Redwood continues his Brisbane Winter prep in Saturday’s Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast, with a view to the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 24.

Antino returned to the races with an unplaced run in the All Aged Stakes but Gollan is confident he’s taken improvement from that effort.

“You won’t see that sort of performance second-up in a Hollindale, but you could see something like that in a Doomben Cup, who knows?” Gollan said.

Drawn poorly in the All Aged Stakes, Antino never had clear running, but Gollan feels his fitness and condition have improved considerably since returning from Sydney.

The Hollindale marks his second attempt at 1800m — the first came in the Five Diamonds, where he was never a factor — but the stable remains confident he can handle the step up.

“It was always the intention to go to the Hollindale second-up,” Gollan explained.

“He didn’t have a lot go his way in the All Aged. I thought it was a pass mark.

“The Gold Coast should suit better. If he handles the conditions, I expect him to run a strong race.”

Currently at $5 in Hollindale Stakes betting, Antino sits behind Buckaroo ($3.50) in early markets, but Gollan believes he’s trending toward a peak performance in the Doomben Cup.
