Tom Charlton is targeting a strong first-up showing for Queensland Derby winner Maison Louis at Randwick, as his owners mull over heading north again this winter season.
A dozen months ago, Super Seth’s son captured a Goulburn maiden at his second attempt en route to the Group 1 Derby success at start seven, with spring form fluctuating after.
His top performance from four runs last time was placing second in the Hill Stakes on return against seasoned Lindermann, resulting in a long spell for the gelding before autumn duties.
“His form just tailed off a bit after starting really well,” Charlton said of Maison Louis’ spring preparation.
“We gave him a bit of time, so he will resume on Saturday, and he can work towards races over a bit further in Sydney and maybe Queensland.
He has a bit of weight so we’re just looking for a positive first-up run and he may go to a Gosford Cup or something like that second-up.”
Maison Louis meets barrier 12 with 60.5kg in the 1500m First Australian Imperial Force Handicap on Saturday.
Whether stablemate Girl About Town joins the HMAS Sydney Handicap (1100m) remains in doubt, with Kensington on Monday in easier company also an option.
The prospect of a good gate at Randwick attracts however, and Charlton intends to review both races before deciding.
Girl About Town, a filly by Zousain, has trialled promisingly, winning her most recent comfortably, and is set to fire wherever she contests.
“She has shown good ability,” he said.
“I’m sure there will be plenty in (Saturday’s) race with similar trials or race performances, but when she does run, she will run well.”
Resuming stayer King Pedro represents Charlton in the Battle of the Dardanelles Handicap (1600m), as mare Polymnia eases in grade for the Anzac Day Cup (1800m) following stakes placings.
“Polymnia is knocking on the door. She’s racing very well, and it looks a good grade of race for her,” Charlton said.
Dylan Gibbons has the call on all four of Charlton’s runners at Randwick.
