Blake Shinn will continue his winning partnership with Apache Song when she resumes in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday, much to the delight of trainer Michael Trotter.
Shinn, currently leading the Melbourne Jockeys’ Premiership, has enjoyed notable success on Apache Song, riding her to three wins from four starts. He also partnered her in a strong Cranbourne jumpout win earlier this month.
“It’s great that Blake is riding her, as he had the pick of a few from what I can gather,” Trotter said. “Her trials have been good, and Blake’s feedback after the second one was excellent.”
Apache Song returns from a spell after an uncharacteristic last placing in a Listed race in February. Her previous effort—a third in the Group 2 Australia Stakes—was the highlight of her last campaign.
“She’s unpredictable in that she doesn’t give much warning when she’s had enough. But she looked great before the Australia Stakes and probably peaked that day,” said Trotter.
Although Caulfield hasn’t been her favourite hunting ground, Trotter is optimistic the mare has turned a corner both physically and mentally.
“She’s more mature now. Back then, we tried stretching her to a mile as a three-year-old, which didn’t suit her. She’s stronger and more seasoned now and should be better equipped to handle Caulfield,” he said.
