There may be no feature event in Sydney this weekend, but Sunday’s Rosehill card remains crucial for Rob and Annabel Archibald as they finalise their Magic Millions carnival team.
West Of Africa and Mickey’s Medal line up in the TAB Handicap (1400m), each needing to perform to earn a Gold Coast assignment.
West Of Africa stormed home to win the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) earlier this year, and Archibald confirmed the gelding is being primed for another crack at the race.
“He was really good that day. He’s going well and hopefully we can get him there again,” Archibald said.
“We have given him a nice break to prepare him for this. His trials have been good, and he seems really well, but it is just a starting point on Sunday, and he’ll improve a lot.”
West Of Africa carries 60kg with the claim and jumps from barrier 11. Mickey’s Medal, meanwhile, has the advantage of an inside alley and arrives off a strong Canberra return behind Kintyre.
“He was beaten by Kintyre, who was a bit deeper into his preparation,” Archibald said.
“He will improve again into this, and he is also on a Magic Millions path if we can get him there.”
Mortal Halo also has Magic Millions ambitions when he contests the Vinnie @ Yarraman Park Handicap (1500m).
The three-year-old resumed with a soft Scone win before pushing Ivan’s Hero last start. Scratched from Doomben on Saturday, he instead heads to Sydney where a victory would strengthen his bid for the Magic Millions Guineas (1400m).
“I think he’s a really nice horse in the making,” Archibald said.
“He’s another who could potentially go to the Guineas. He will have to win his way into that, but he’s definitely got ability.”
The stable will also saddle Plundering, Bella Corazon and Tuned among a strong six-horse Rosehill team, with the meeting shifted to Sunday due to extreme heat forecast for Saturday.
