Arctic Glamour upstages G2 Hot Danish Stakes rivals

Connections once believed Arctic Glamour was headed for the top after she defeated future Group 1 winner Joliestar early in her career. However, the mare endured a long drought before breaking through again on Saturday in the Group 2 Hot Danish Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill.

“It’s been a long time coming,” co-trainer Sterling Alexiou said.

“She had that unlucky run in the Missile Stakes behind Schwarz and things just haven’t gone her way for a while.

“I’m thrilled for the ownership group. When she beat Joliestar, we thought anything was possible. It’s been two years since then, so this is a great relief.”

Arctic Glamour, fitted with blinkers, travelled on speed under Tom Sherry and fought hard to prevail at $41, defeating Bauhinia and Snow In May.

The victory completed a riding treble for Sherry, who had earlier struck with Tuned and Luskaire.

“I got some nice rides today, but that doesn’t always mean it’ll turn out,” Sherry said.

“When everything goes right it’s a great feeling. The blinkers really helped her travel and stick on.”

The stable also credited minor training tweaks, including hurdle schooling and sharpening work, for the mare’s turnaround.

“We just mixed things up a bit and it clearly worked,” Alexiou said.

Retirement was on the table had she failed — but instead Arctic Glamour is now on track to run in the Festival Stakes (1500m) later this month.
