The historic Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap has been a proven launchpad for future Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup contenders, a tradition legendary trainer Bart Cummings frequently used. The Leon and Troy Corstens and Will Larkin team will follow that path this weekend when talented mare Lady In Pink begins her spring preparation in Saturday’s Aurie’s Star at Flemington.
“Leon was with Bart for many years, and Bart always liked to start his Cups horses in this race,” Larkin said. “We’re taking a similar approach. She generally improves with racing, and we think having this run before the Group 2 P B Lawrence Stakes (1400m) will have her primed for her second-up run.”
Following the P B Lawrence, the team is eyeing the Listed Heatherlie Stakes (1700m) at Caulfield two weeks later. “The long-term plan is to aim towards the Caulfield Cup, but that’s still only a dream at this stage. She has to prove she’s capable at that level,” Larkin added.
Stablemate Marble Nine, meanwhile, will look to extend his unbeaten Flemington run to four when he contests the Aurie’s Star. The consistent sprinter has thrived since his most recent win in the Listed Santa Ana Lane Sprint Series Final on July 5. Initially earmarked for a spell, Marble Nine impressed during a short freshen-up and a strong jump-out on July 18, convincing connections to continue.
“He’s shown no signs of needing a break. He’s adapted perfectly to the Flemington straight, races on speed, and can run a solid 1200m,” Larkin said.
