Bjorn Baker believes Fun Fact can defend St Leger Stakes

Last year, the Bjorn Baker-trained Fun Fact led all the way to take out the ATC St Leger Stakes and Baker believes he is a live chance to repeat the dose at Royal Randwick this Saturday.

A race that was first run in 1841 and was originally just for three-year-olds over 2400m, has now had a few tweaks and sits at 2600m for three-year-olds and upwards. It boasts some champion past-winners such as Phar Lap (1930), Peter Pan (1933), Beau Zam (1988) and Tie The Knot (2000).

The six-year-old The Factor gelding has been building up to form this preparation culminating with a well-fought out third in Group 3 company last time out.

“He’s been running very well and his run in the Colin Stephen last start was excellent,” Baker said.

“We’re pretty happy with him going into Saturday and we’re hopeful he can be right in the finish.”

With eight winners from his past 42 starters (19%), the Baker camp has been in a rich vein of form this season and currently sits second on the NSW Metropolitan Trainer’s Premiership.

Bakers also saddles up a number of other key runners throughout the ten-race card including Prime Candidate in the Group 3 Sydney Stakes over 1200m.

“He ran fourth in this race last year and I think he’s in very good order,” Baker said.

“His first-up run was good but the only concern for him would be that we’d definitely be after a better track.”

Soldier Of Love is nominated for the Star Mile and Baker is confident the Mawingo gelding will like the open spaces of Randwick.

“He’s going very well, he’s had a bit of a freshen up since his last run,” Baker said.

“He’ll really appreciate getting back to Randwick and over the mile.”

Baker also has three two-year-olds nominated for the Victory Vein Plate with him favouring his Kermadec colt Midori Fuji.

“I’m leaning towards Midori Fuji for that race,” Baker said.

“He’s a nice horse. He won a trial at Warwick Farm and looks to go pretty well.”

This Saturday’s running of The Tab Everest will be the first time crowds will be allowed on course in months with a cap of 10,000 attendees being permitted.
