Promising colt Central Coast delivered on his hefty price tag with a determined victory at Canterbury on Wednesday, setting up a potential tilt at stakes level in Queensland.
The $1.4 million son of Wootton Bassett and champion mare Sunlight was caught behind a wall of runners in the Myplates Handicap (1250m), but jockey Adam Hyeronimus remained composed, angling the favourite into the clear and driving home to defeat stablemate Crossbow ($19) by a neck. Kokatahi ($13) ran third, giving Chris Waller a clean sweep of the placings.
Charlie Duckworth, representing Waller while the trainer is in the UK, confirmed black-type plans. “There is a Listed 1400 metre race in ten days in Queensland,” he said. “He is part of a colts’ syndicate so getting black-type is important.”
Hyeronimus, who substituted for Nash Rawiller, said the tempo was moderate and contributed to Central Coast racing keenly mid-race. “I was in an awkward position but he showed acceleration and class to get out and finish strong,” he said.
The jockey doubled up later in the day, partnering debutante Kakadu Sunset ($10) to a narrow win in the Ranvet Handicap (1250m), with Avenue Montaigne ($4.20) and Ernaux ($2.70 fav) filling the minors.
