The attraction of yet another Group One trophy at home has spurred the Campione D’italia team to head into the final instalment of the juvenile triple crown, hunting a second high-grade success in the Champagne Stakes at Randwick.
The colt looks to trace the steps of fellow stable resident Militarize from three years earlier, going for the Sires’ Produce Stakes-Champagne Stakes pairing, trainer Chris Waller stating it aligns well to grant him a further home-town Group One chance amid his sharp form and even weight conditions.
“Group Ones are so hard to win, and when you’re in good form and there’s a Group One race just for two-year-olds in your backyard, (it’s hard to ignore),” Waller said.
“When he returns, he will have a Group One penalty in The Run To The Rose. We’ve got a few up-and-comers coming through, and you don’t know where you draw.
Then you’ve got to go to the Caulfield Guineas and travel first time around Caulfield.
There are a lot of unknowns, whereas he’s here.”
A fantastic two-year-old year for Campione D’italia includes the Skyline Stakes (1200m) win at his second appearance and a sharp finish for fourth in the Golden Slipper (1200m), capped by victory in the Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).
Bred from elite sire Snitzel, he is the feature of the 13-runner Champagne Stakes (1600m) field, drawing barrier four for jockey James McDonald.
Stablemates Fireball (barrier two) and Diameter, who took Saturday’s Fernhill Mile (eight), accompany him, joined by four fillies such as Sires’ Produce Stakes second Miss Chanel and the Ben Brisbourne duo Grinzinger Heart and Salann.
The Champagne Stakes has seen six filly winners in the last 20 years, with She’s Extreme achieving it most recently in 2022.
