Mr Brightside set for return in the Memsie Stakes

Despite a rare off-day in Hong Kong, Ben Hayes remains upbeat about Mr Brightside’s chances heading into the Spring Carnival, with the multiple Group 1 winner stepping out for his first public hit-out of the season at Flemington on Monday.

The seasoned eight-year-old was fourth in a quiet 800m jumpout as he builds toward a resumption in the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield, a race he won in 2023 and finished second in last year. Hayes is confident his stable star is tracking well despite his last-start flop in the Champions Mile at Sha Tin.

“He’s been his usual self, honestly. His preparation has been straightforward,” Hayes said.

“His coat looks better than this time last year after spending time in a warmer climate overseas. He’s sound, eating well and looks terrific.”

Mr Brightside wasn’t asked to do much in the jumpout, coasting behind Evaporate, who was pushed out in a more vigorous gallop. It was his first public appearance since finishing at the rear of the field in Hong Kong, ending a run of 20 top-two finishes from 23 starts. That run included placings in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Cox Plate and Australian Cup.

“He didn’t fire in Hong Kong, but horses like Docklands and Antino also struggled there and then bounced back with big performances,” Hayes said.

“Docklands went on to win at Ascot and Antino won a Group 1. We’re hopeful Mr Brightside can do the same back home.”

He is scheduled for another jumpout on August 15 before returning to the races in the Memsie Stakes on August 30.
