Exciting juvenile Hidden Achievement has put his name on the Brisbane winter carnival radar following a smart win in Saturday’s Ortus Financial 2YO Handicap (1200m) at Gosford.

Sent out at $5, the well-bred colt justified his hefty $675,000 price tag with a determined performance, surging to the front in the home straight and keeping clear to win by three-quarters of a length. The son of a leading sire was impressive in his second career outing after placing on debut at Canterbury.

Stablemate Sarapo ($8) closed off well from the rear to claim second on debut, while race favourite Chicama ($3.70) faded late after leading early.

Waller’s foreman Zane Jones confirmed the stable is considering a tilt at black-type races in Queensland after Hidden Achievement’s continued progress.

“Lovely colt. He has just improved out of sight from his trials to his debut performance,” Jones said.

“Hidden Achievement put the writing on the wall the other day. We will let the dust settle, see how he comes through it and decide on Queensland then.”

Jockey Adam Hyeronimus took full advantage of the opportunity with many senior riders away in Brisbane, producing a composed ride on the emerging galloper.

“Nice to ride a very nice horse, a very nice two-year-old colt for Chris,” Hyeronimus said.

“Six furlongs probably isn’t his distance but he was just too good for them and he is only on the way up.”

Hidden Achievement and Sarapo are both nominated for the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and the J J Atkins (1600m), two of the major juvenile contests of the Queensland winter carnival.

Favourite backers had no luck with Sequista, who was withdrawn on arrival after sustaining float-related injuries before the race.
