Flying Embers set to target the Gunsynd Classic

Flying Embers has earned a crack at stakes level, with her next target set as the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) at Eagle Farm, as trainer John Thompson prepares to give the filly her first taste of black-type competition.

The rising star has been in top form, securing four wins from her last five starts, including a recent Benchmark-72 Midway Handicap at Randwick where she defeated older rivals in style despite covering extra ground.

“She’s a nice filly,” Thompson said.

“She was wide the entire trip at Randwick and still proved too strong, which shows her ability. Racing against her own age now is a bonus.”

Although the mile distance presents a new challenge for Flying Embers, Thompson is optimistic based on her closing strength in recent 1400m contests.

“She hasn’t gone the 1600 before, but the way she’s been finishing, I think she’ll handle it,” he added.

The Gunsynd Classic is part of Saturday’s high-profile Stradbroke Handicap program, and Thompson is hopeful the filly can secure some valuable black-type before heading for a spell.

“She’s pulled up super from Randwick and deserves her shot. I think this will be her final run before we tip her out for the spring,” he said.

“She’s tough, honest and has quality — everything you want.”
