Broome Cup 2024 favourite goes beyond expectations

Finishing top three in five of six starts, Vevinsky has thrived and been a real find for Kelvin Moore after leaving David Harrison’s yard in Perth.

Vevinsky’s career-best form has been a welcome bonus for Moore, but a bigger payday awaits in Saturday’s $100,000 Broome Cup (2200m).

Vevinsky is the current favourite for the Broome Cup after winning the Derby Cup (1800m) and Kimberley Cup (2020m) at his past two starts.

It was never part of Moore’s plan to target Broome’s biggest and richest race, but Vevinsky’s recent performances made him reconsider.

“To be honest, this was never on our radar,” Moore said on Tab radio.

“The Derby Cup was the goal, and we achieved that.

“We decided to have a crack at the Kimberley Cup, and he duly saluted.

“Then the syndicate said why not have a crack at the Broome Cup and here we are.

“The Kimberley Cup was awesome; the horse hadn’t started for three weeks.

“I’m not the best trainer of stayers, but we’re here and going to have a go.”

Although punters have identified Vevinsky as the market leader, Moore says it won’t be a one-horse affair.

He has healthy respect for top trainer Darryn Pateman, who’s represented by three runners in the Broome Cup.

Pateman saddles Gambler’s Gold and Let’s Sea, but it’s the ten-year-old veteran Ombudsman that Moore fears the most.

“It’s an even field, pretty competitive and there are a couple of smokies,” Moore said.

“Darryn Pateman’s had a pretty good season and Ombudsman is down, he’s won a Broome Cup and is down in the weights.

“We’re going up in weight and can’t claim and go up an extra 200m, so there are a few variables, you know.”

After his Derby Cup and Kimberley Cup success, Kristo Sardelic maintains the ride on Vevinsky.

The Oratorio gelding, who has drawn gate 10, is $4.40 with Tab touch.

Awesome Chatter has won his past three starts including the Roebourne Cup (2200m)-Port Hedland Cup (2200m) double.

From barrier six, Shaun Mcgruddy is the pilot. Tab touch have him rated a $4.80 chance.

Zadar Rock is next at $8, meeting support from $11.

Moore says winning the Broome Cup with Vevinsky would be a dream come true.

“I’m probably the longest-serving trainer in Broome,” Moore said.”

“I’ve seen the best trainers win it: Harold Parnham, Phil Grantham, a lot of mentors I’ve watched over the years.

“They don’t realise the effect they’ve had on my life.

“It will be an emotional day if we did salute.”
