The training team of Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman teamed up with apprentice Luke Cartwright for a memorable day at Sandown Hillside, notching three consecutive winners in races five to seven.
Their successful streak kicked off with Suances, who stormed home at $15 odds to overtake the favourite Changing Colours late. One race later, Saban surged from off the speed to win the Sportsbet Race Replays Handicap (1800m) at Benchmark 100 level, showcasing a powerful late burst to beat Sayedaty Sadaty and Tempesti.
“He can be a little bit difficult, this horse,” said Katherine Coleman.
“I think the fact that Luke’s had a couple of rides on him now, he’s sort of got a feel for him and he knows that he can have a tendency to want to lay in at times as well.
“But he can hit a little bit of a flat spot and you’ve got to nurse him through it. It was a lovely, confident ride from Luke today.”
Cartwright sealed the treble in race seven with a daring front-running performance aboard Roadcone, guiding the $4.40 betting sites selection to a decisive 2¼-length win in the Stow Storage Solutions Handicap (1600m) at Benchmark 84 grade.
“I am a bit speechless. I had a nice even book, and if they turned up, I thought they could run a really nice race,” Cartwright said.
“And for all horses to turn up and myself give them a good ride, it means a lot.”
Cartwright took full advantage of his 3kg claim, which allowed him to ride as low as 50kg, including on Roadcone.
“I knew if I held him down the dip and let him skip with 51 (kilograms), I think he was going to take some catching.
“I thought he’d quicken up very well, but he quickened up even better than well. So, no, I’m rapt.”
The treble marked a career-first city hat trick for Cartwright and the same milestone for Coleman, who became co-trainer with Moody in 2023.
