William Pike added another stellar chapter to his remarkable career on Saturday, notching up a treble at Bunbury, including a memorable win in the Belmont Oaks, further cementing his lead in both the national and Perth jockey premiership standings.
Pike opened the meeting on a high with an easy victory aboard the talented Twisted Steel, endured a few anxious moments in the Oaks before guiding Fancy Red home, and capped the day with a composed ride on Supernatural to secure win number three.
Fancy Red’s Oaks win continued a dominant trend for Pike and Adam Durrant, marking their twelfth win in the Listed winter feature. The mare has risen rapidly since her debut, capturing five wins from her last eight starts and impressing again after a strong lead-up win at Pinjarra.
“A few weeks ago, I thought she couldn’t get the trip and might be ready for a spell,” Pike said on Tabradio. “I was proven wrong, and I’m very happy with how it turned out. The team had this race in mind for a while, and it paid off.”
Pike also heaped praise on Twisted Steel, a two-from-two youngster he believes has carnival potential. “He felt amazing to ride. If all races went that smoothly, it’d be too easy. He’s definitely got something about him,” he said.
Now sitting on 157.5 wins nationally, Pike holds a narrow edge over Blake Shinn (150) and leads Chris Parnham 98.5 to 94 in the race for Perth’s riding crown.
“I’m aiming for the local title first,” Pike said. “But if the national one comes too, that’s a bonus. Yesterday’s results certainly help.”
