The relocation of the $10 million Golden Eagle from Rosehill to Randwick may have raised eyebrows, but for co-trainer Tom Charlton, the switch could work out perfectly this year.

Charlton, who trains in partnership with John O’Shea, prepares Linebacker — a four-year-old who has consistently saved his best performances for Randwick.

The son of Super Seth returned to winning form last start, claiming the $1 million Silver Eagle (1300m) at Randwick, his first victory since the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) back in March. Charlton said the track is a major factor in the gelding’s consistency.

“His best form is at Randwick, he won the Randwick Guineas, which is not too dissimilar to the Golden Eagle, and obviously he won last start over 1300,” Charlton said. “Being at Randwick we’re very happy about and now we just need a few things to go our way.”

Linebacker is considered a leading contender against Chris Waller’s undefeated mare Autumn Glow, who dominates the market for the 17-horse feature. Autumn Glow drew barrier nine, while Linebacker came up with an ideal gate five. Japanese Group 1 star Panja Tower lines up from gate four.

Linebacker looked primed for his return when winning a Randwick trial on October 7 over Overpass and Ka Ying Rising, and he backed that up with a decisive Silver Eagle performance on October 18. Charlton expects him to elevate again on Saturday.

“He was a little bit fresh before the race, which was good to see, so there would be no doubt there should be a bit of improvement and getting to a trip where he should be most effective,” he said.

“Everyone seems so happy with him at home and we’re looking for to it.”

Regular rider Zac Lloyd, who guided Linebacker to victory in both the Randwick Guineas and Silver Eagle, stays aboard.
