The Furious Stakes is shaping up to be a compelling contest between Chilly Girl, who won the Rosebud, and Pembrey, the heroine of the Silver Shadow Stakes, as the early spring form for three-year-old fillies continues to crystallise.
Both fillies have established themselves early in the spring campaign. Chilly Girl showed great determination to overhaul Blue Door in the Rosebud (1100m), and Pembrey demonstrated impressive sustained speed to win the Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) by a comfortable margin.
These two fillies head a final field of ten runners for the second event in the Princess Series. They will have the opportunity to confirm their initial strong performances when they face a select field that includes Reisling Stakes winner Chayan, the former Perth-based filly Striking Alibi, and Bangkok Hottie, who was the runner-up in the Silver Shadow Stakes.
Chilly Girl’s co-trainer, Sterling Alexiou, has reported that the filly has come through her first-up run exceptionally well, especially considering it was her initial race since January and only the second of her career.
“Even though she’d had a really good grounding, she was first-up after quite some time, and she really had to dig deep,” Alexiou stated.
“She bounced through it incredibly well. She nearly could have backed up in the Silver Shadow.”
“She’ll take her place in the Furious and we expect her to run really well, then she’ll go on to the Tea Rose (Stakes),” he added.
The form from the Rosebud race has since been bolstered, with Blue Door finishing second to the celebrated Golden Slipper winner Guest House in the San Domenico Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last Saturday.
Chilly Girl has secured an advantageous draw in barrier three, while Pembrey will jump from gate seven, and the resuming Chayan from the outside alley.
Tim Clark is set to continue his association with the Rosebud winner, and Alexiou confirmed that Chilly Girl has continued to progress positively.
“She has trained on well. It’s going to be a pretty strong race, but we feel she’s right up to those better fillies,” he commented.
