Ciaron Maher is set to unleash dual Group 1 talent at Randwick this weekend, with Gringotts and Light Infantry Man lining up in the $1 million 7 Stakes. Both are looking to bounce back after contrasting runs in the Winx Stakes where stablemate Via Sistina stole the show.
Gringotts, who finished fifth after meeting interference, has since trialled strongly at Wyong, leaving Maher encouraged. “He will improve a fair bit off his first run,” the trainer said. The gelding famously scored his maiden Group 1 win second-up in the George Ryder Stakes earlier this year, narrowly holding out Fangirl, who is expected to be among Saturday’s rivals once more.
Light Infantry Man endured a more forgettable run first-up, racing keenly on the Heavy 10 track and finishing last. Maher is prepared to overlook the effort and has mapped out a campaign geared towards the Cox Plate. “His best win was on that really hot tempo in the Australian Cup,” Maher explained. “He thrived when the pressure was on, so maybe through a Hill Stakes and then down south. That’s the rough plan.”
The 7 Stakes field may also feature stablemate Detonator Jack, along with heavyweights like Ceolwulf and Private Eye from Joe Pride’s yard. Saturday’s program will also showcase the Group 2 The Shorts, where Everest aspirants Joliestar, Briasa and Private Harry begin their spring preparations, though last year’s victor Headwall has been ruled out with injury.
