Ciaron Maher filly makes return at Caulfield races

A promising filly is set to make her return to racing at Caulfield after showing early potential in Melbourne’s top two-year-old events.

Trained by Ciaron Maher, Cherish Me is entered for Saturday’s Senet Gambling Law Experts Handicap (1200m) with Craig Williams taking the ride.

The filly made a winning debut at Geelong with Thomas Stockdale in the saddle before contesting the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield, where she finished ninth as the $6.50 second favourite, ridden by Jamie Mott.

Following that Group 1 effort, Cherish Me was given time off and has since trialled twice, the second of which saw her finish runner-up under Williams on the Cranbourne Synthetic track on July 14.

Ciaron Maher is pleased with her progress and believes she’s on track for a strong spring.

“She did really well during her break, and I think she’s still getting there,” Maher said.

“We’ve had a high opinion of her from the first time she went to the races. She’s got good ability, and I think she’ll keep furnishing.

“Timing wise, the Quezette would work, but we could also have Signature Scent going there as I think it would be a nice race for that filly.”

Cherish Me could next line up in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) on August 16, and may be stretched to a mile in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) later this spring.

“She relaxes very well in her races so she could get a little bit further and she does have a beautiful action,” Maher said.

Stablemate Brazenga is also set to resume, having run third in a maiden at Bendigo back in March.
