Mary Eliza made amends for her frustrating first-up outing with a gritty win at Caulfield on Saturday, giving trainers Katherine Coleman and Peter Moody a reason to look ahead to the Queensland winter features.

The Super Seth filly proved too good in the GMH Fire & Safety Australia Handicap (1600m), delivering on her potential after a luckless run at Mornington. Sent out the $2.60 betting site favourite, she travelled just off the pace under 51kg and dug deep in the closing stages to win by half a length.

“Speaking pre-race, we said if she begins well and you can slide to that spot and take a bit of luck out of the equation it’s going to make things a whole lot easier,” Coleman said.

“After the way it panned out at Mornington last start, it was very pleasing to see her settle there just outside the leader.”

With Luke Cartwright in the saddle, Mary Eliza held off a late surge from I Only Wish ($41), while Muirfield ($18) finished third, less than a length behind.

The victory was her second from five starts and firmly re-establishes her as a promising filly with more to offer as she matures.

“She’s a filly that we’ve always had a good opinion of, she’s so well-bred and she’s a lovely filly to have around, but we’ve just had to be patient with her and give her her chance to mature,” Coleman said.

“Even still, she doesn’t quite look there yet, she’s still a little bit babyish and a little bit light and whatever she does this preparation she’s going to improve upon.”

It was a strong day for her sire Super Seth, with another of his daughters, Madiyya, notching her second win from three starts in a separate 1400m fillies benchmark event at Caulfield.
