Tom Charlton believes Cross Tasman has found the ideal race at Royal Randwick this Saturday to clinch another victory.
The five-year-old gelding has been a model of consistency in his career, securing four wins and six placings from eleven starts. His recent form shows two second-place finishes since his return from a spell, first in the Goulburn Cup and then behind the capable Decorum at Rosehill three weeks prior.
Cross Tasman is scheduled to compete in the HKJC World Pool Handicap, a Benchmark 88 event. Charlton, who trains in conjunction with John O’Shea, stated that the horse’s current form is more than suitable for the 1400-metre contest.
“It was a strong performance last time,” Charlton stated. “We just nearly had the winner in a pocket which would have potentially changed things but the winner there looks a group horse and he gapped out third. He’s really progressing nicely and he’ll present a good chance this weekend.”
The Michael Freedman-trained Decorum is entered for The Silver Eagle this Saturday, with O’Shea & Charlton also having Napoleonic in the race. However, Charlton indicated that the stable is favouring the Sydney Stakes over 1200 metres for Napoleonic.
Beyond Saturday’s race, Cross Tasman is being considered for significant events in Sydney’s Spring Carnival, with a strong possibility of targeting the $750,000 Little Dance on Melbourne Cup day.
“He is qualified for the Little Dance on Cup day having placed in the Goulburn Cup first up and that would seem a logical route for him after Saturday,” Charlton advised. “The Five Diamonds over 1800 metres is not out of the realms of possibility as well, it would be a five day backup but it’s something we’ll have in the back of our mind as well.”
