Shaun Dwyer is no stranger to the Magic Millions stage, but if Dragonne Rouge can win Friday night’s Magic Millions National 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast, it would mark a long-awaited milestone — his first million-dollar race win.
Dwyer’s earlier Magic Millions success came with Regimental Gal back in 2003, before the prizemoney swelled to seven figures. That filly later landed Group 1s like the Black Caviar Lightning and William Reid Stakes.
Despite overseeing horses like Miss Leonidas and Ville Verde in major contests, Dwyer has rarely had the opportunity to chase million-dollar riches — making Dragonne Rouge’s rise all the more rewarding.
“I don’t think I’ve had too many runners in million-dollar races,” Dwyer said. “I’m very happy to be taking her to the races on Friday night.”
The $25,000 filly is a full sister to French Blaze, a highly promising colt owned by the same group, who tragically died of colic. Dwyer was recommended to the owners by former trainer Andrew Williamson, and Dragonne Rouge has already delivered on that faith with three straight wins.
Her most recent victory came in the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes at Eagle Farm, following wins at the Sunshine Coast and Doomben. With the JJ Atkins originally on the radar, Dwyer opted instead to focus on this Classic, believing it suits her development better at this stage.
“She’s so relaxed and professional, but the next 18 months are important. I thought this was a good opportunity,” he said.
Drawn in barrier six and to be ridden by Andrew Mallyon, Dragonne Rouge faces stiff competition from Caulfield winner Prince Tycoon, Amosu, and stablemate Sisstainable among others.
