Dry weather keeps Argentia in Melbourne

By RS NewsWire on 25/02/2022 at 5:37 pm
Filled in: News - Angus Armanasco Stakes

The big wet in Sydney has kept the highly talented Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained filly Argentia in Melbourne for another run.

Argentia had been entered for the Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday, but the filly will instead run at Caulfield in the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m).

The Freedman stable believes the filly is a Group 1 winner in waiting and have plans afoot to head to Sydney in the not-too-distant future.

Argentia got on the board early in her career with a debut win at Flemington and was one of the leading fancies for the Group 1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield after entries closed.

But as the Freedman stable’s racing manager Brad Taylor pointed out the filly pulled up with an issue after her second start at The Valley last September which required time in the paddock.

Argentia made a winning return at Caulfield on February 12, winning the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) when the stable considered her underdone for her return.

With the Randwick track deluged by 200mm of rain this week, Taylor said it had been a wise decision to keep Argentia in Melbourne to race on good ground at Caulfield.

“She would have hated it up there,” Taylor said.

“She has hated it in her jump outs down here. We are going to get a nice track at Caulfield and barrier one is probably the only question mark.

“But she is a pretty talented filly, and we expect her to be hard to beat.”

The stable has already ruled out Argentia contesting the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday week, but the filly could be seen in Sydney the following week for her first Group 1 assignment.

Providing the rain stops and the track dry out satisfactorily, Argentia could head to Rosehill for Coolmore Classic (1500m) on March 12.
