Chris Waller is chasing his maiden success in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) when he saddles Estremo at Caulfield on Saturday.
The Prelude has not traditionally featured in Waller’s Caulfield Guineas plans, though he has won the Group 1 classic itself three times with Press Statement and The Autumn Sun making the trip from Sydney. Last year’s Guineas winner Private Life also contested the Prelude, finishing fourth, before scoring in the main event at odds of $13.
Estremo has been given a Melbourne-focused preparation, having two runs at Moonee Valley where he finished third to Prelude rival Space Rider on August 23 and fifth behind Rosberg on September 6, both over 1200m. Waller took him to Caulfield for a gallop on Tuesday to gain valuable track experience.
“I probably made a mistake running him over too short a distance last time,” Waller said. “He was probably ready for 1400 metres last start, and he gets the 1400 metres this week. He’s had a couple of races running left-handed in Melbourne and he’s been running well, so he’ll get his chance on Saturday.”
Ben Melham takes the ride on Estremo, who will be having just his fifth career start in the Prelude.
