Extremely Lucky takes Moonee Valley shot

With the good prize money on offer for sprinters in Sydney during the spring, a senior member of the ownership group of Extremely Lucky would like to see the gelding up north.

But first there are some races in Melbourne for the Adelaide-trained sprinter with one of those being the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) at The Valley on Saturday.

And if all goes according to plan, trainer Will Clarken hopes to be back next month for the Group 1 Moir Stakes over the same course and distance.

“He is part-owned by Richard Pegum who is a Sydneyite, and he is keen to see him run up there,” Clarken told RSN.

“I would love to think we could run him in the Carlyon into the Moir and have plenty up the sleeve to chase some of Peter V’Landys prize money up there.”

Extremely Lucky will be having his sixth start on Saturday, chasing his fourth win.

He staged a huge effort to win the Listed Lightning Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville on July 30 at his first run back following a brief break, coming from last on the turn to win by almost a length.

Clarken does not want to change Extremely Lucky’s racing pattern, although he concedes the gelding is likely to lose more times than he wins because of that pattern of get back and run on.

However, Clarken does see pace in the race to allow Extremely Lucky to get over the top of his rivals.

“I’ve had a bit of luck with horses that get off them over the 1000 (metres) at The Valley,” Clarken said.

“So long as they go a gallop they can come back to you, providing it is not one of those summer tracks.

“Most of the field go forward, most are drawn outside with the exception of Esta La Roca, so you would say they’ll go a good gallop.

“We’ll just ride the horse to find the line and hopefully he can get over the top of them.”
