Fangirl gets first look at Caulfield ahead of the Memsie Stakes

Chris Waller left his Sydney base to be on hand at Caulfield on Tuesday, personally overseeing Fangirl’s final preparations for the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m).

The mare, who was scratched from last weekend’s Winx Stakes at Randwick due to heavy conditions, was floated to Melbourne immediately after and will launch her spring campaign at Caulfield. Waller said it was crucial to see how Fangirl handled her first look at the track.

“She’s a sweet girl. Nothing fazes her and on race day you press the button and she explodes,” Waller said. “If she gets around Caulfield, she will be exciting to watch.”

With Mark Zahra in the saddle, Fangirl galloped comfortably alongside stablemate Moira. “She had a good look around and that was the reason for coming,” Waller explained. “She’s fit, she was ready to run last week, and she’s settled well into Flemington.”

Waller has yet to decide which other stablemates will line up. Moira is likely to be held back for the So You Think Stakes as a stepping stone to the Underwood Stakes, while Anisette and Buckaroo also remain under consideration. Buckaroo, the defending Underwood winner, could instead target the Group 2 Tramway Stakes in Sydney.

“It’s a tough Memsie this year, but with luck in running, Fangirl can be right in the finish,” Waller said.
