Favourite Aeliana targets group 1 double in tancred stakes

Autumn Glow has been earmarked for a Queen Elizabeth Stakes raid after this week’s update, meaning Aeliana can press on promptly at Rosehill to face Tancred Stakes holder Dubai Honour.

Aeliana joined two other Group 1 victories notched by Chris Waller and James Mcdonald on Golden Slipper Day, without prior runs on successive Saturdays, as the Tancred Stakes brings her back to 2400m following her thumping of ATC Australian Derby rivals last year.

Markets list her at a stout $1.65, shortening Dubai Honour to $4.20, with five additional Waller runners in the event, notably advancing Soul Of Spain.

Waller’s assistant Charlie Duckworth tipped the Sky High Stakes placer from his last outing as a potential barn spoiler if successful.

“I think he’s going to be hard to beat,” Duckworth said.

“Aeliana is on the back-up. It was a tough, testing run (in the Ranvet Stakes).

“She’s got the form and everything, but a mile-and-a-half at three-year-old grade against a mile-and-a-half against these older, tougher horses is a different ball game.

“River Of Stars will improve up to 2400 metres, and you will see the same from Valiant King. He jumps out of the ground when he gets to 2400 metres as well, so we’ve got some very good hopes.”

The Tancred Stakes (2400m) has gone to mares thrice in the past 10 editions, Verry Elleegant providing the freshest example in 2020.

The star jockey Mcdonald stays on Aeliana, also aligning with Waller in the day’s alternative Group 1 where ex-New Zealand Ohope Wins enters Sydney racing for the team in the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).
