South Australia’s thoroughbred racing sector continues to grow in strength, generating more than $500 million in economic value, as outlined in the latest IER report.

Based on data from the 2024 financial year, the report highlighted a $515.4 million economic impact—an increase of 14.2% from the previous year—while supporting 3,462 full-time equivalent jobs across the state.

The report also noted that 11,836 individuals, including employees, participants, and volunteers, are actively involved in the South Australian racing scene.

Racing’s influence extended across both urban and regional communities, with more than 163,000 people attending the state’s 183 race meetings over the year-long period.

South Australian businesses, particularly in the hospitality, accommodation, and retail sectors, saw significant benefits from the flow-on effects of raceday spending.

Animal welfare remains a strong focus, with Racing SA delivering drought relief to over 500 thoroughbreds and distributing 1161 off-the-track care kits through its Thorough Care initiative.

Racing SA Chair Rob Rorrison welcomed the findings, saying they underscore the deep economic and social relevance of the sport across the state.

“Racing in South Australia isn’t just about competition—it’s about fostering community spirit and contributing meaningfully to our economy,” Rorrison said.

“This report affirms the industry’s upward trajectory and doesn’t even capture the impact of recent developments such as our landmark partnership with Sportsbet and the increased prize money injections.”
