Trainer Dominic Sutton is prioritizing the well-being of his horse over personal ambition as Victoria’s richest two-year-old race approaches.

Sutton has Sword Of Legacy among the 81 youngsters still in contention for the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 22. However, Sutton, who manages dual yards at Ballarat and Flemington, emphasized that a lot needs to happen before a Blue Diamond start is confirmed for Sword Of Legacy.

The filly will make her second start in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) at Sandown on Saturday. A win would secure her a spot in the Blue Diamond, but Sutton remains cautious, acknowledging that much can change in the three weeks leading up to the race.

“She is still in the Blue Diamond, but we’ll get through Saturday first before we make any decisions about that race,” Sutton said.

Sword Of Legacy, a daughter of Too Darn Hot, debuted at Flemington on January 18, finishing second to Cavalry Girl. Sutton was pleased with her performance and noted significant improvement since that run.

“She’s always been a very natural filly,” Sutton said. “She’s always done everything we’ve asked of her, and she’s done it quite effortlessly. She had a nice piece of work on Monday and came through it well.”

With the scratching of Tempted from Saturday’s race, Sword Of Legacy will now jump from barrier eight in the nine-horse field. Sutton isn’t overly concerned about the draw, especially with Damian Lane, who has ridden the filly in race conditions before, taking the reins.

“The draw is a little awkward, but it’s a 1000-metre race,” Sutton said. “There’s a long run home, and we’ve got a very good jockey on board. He’ll make the right decision, especially since he’s already had a feel for her on race day. She looks like a nice filly and should run well.”
