Filly Satono Glow eyes Roman Consul Stakes glory

Emerging sprinter Satono Glow has already travelled to Melbourne once this campaign, and if all goes to plan, she’s set for another journey south at the end of the month.

A setback before her intended Sydney resumption led trainers John O’Shea and Tom Charlton to divert her to Victoria. There, the three-year-old filly recorded a brilliant victory in the Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1100m) at Flemington.

While the option to stay in the southern capital was available, Charlton stated they decided to bring her back for Saturday’s Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill. They believed she had adequate preparation on the straight course, with the ultimate aim being the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on October 28.

“This race – bringing her back home and preparing her from here – we thought would be preferable to going to the Danehill (Stakes),” Charlton said.

“She’s had two goes at the straight, so we don’t feel like we need to do that by any means. We know each time we’ve prepared her from Sydney and trucked her down (she’s won), so we’ll try to replicate that, all being well, in the Coolmore.

“The Roman Consul has such a good record going into the Coolmore in recent years and that was the main factor.”

The only filly in the Roman Consul Stakes field, Satono Glow attracted interest from an Everest slot holder who contacted connections to gauge their willingness for a start in the $20 million race.

Given her relative inexperience, the idea was quickly dismissed, but Charlton expressed hope that the scenario would be different in 12 months.

“We felt that wasn’t the right race for her. We’re trying to build her profile and she’s still young,” he commented.

“We didn’t think it was the right set-up for her at this stage. Hopefully next year.”

The stable will also have Peyton in the Rosehill feature. However, Charlton expressed caution regarding the colt’s chances after he missed his scheduled second-up run at Warwick Farm on September 23, having reared in the barriers and being a late scratching.

“We were hoping to go there, then here,” Charlton remarked.

“He hasn’t had the perfect preparation for it, but he needs to get racing before potentially looking at something like a Red Anchor Stakes at Flemington.

“If he can run well on Saturday he will come on significantly from it.”

Peyton is currently a $41 chance, while Satono Glow – aiming to become the first filly to win the Roman Consul Stakes since Jolie Bay in 2012 – is the $2.90 second pick behind the $2.60 favourite Paradoxium.
